Slope protection in Idrijska Zala among the most extensive projects in Slovenia

Challenge

The Spodnja Idrija–Godovič state road section runs along a steep slope above the Zala River, where unstable rock blocks, overhanging slopes, and falling rocks posed a significant hazard. Due to the demanding terrain, specialized protection measures using mesh and flexible rockfall barriers were required, with helicopter-assisted installation needed at the most inaccessible locations.

The implementation of protective measures against falling rocks and rockfalls in Idrijska Zala is in its final phase. This is one of the most extensive projects of its kind in Slovenia, involving skilled loggers, rope access technicians, mobile crane operators, and helicopter transport teams.

The route of the Spodnja Idrija – Godovič state road from km 4.872 to km 7.959 is cut into a steep slope between the Zala River and the slopes of Zagodov, Govekarjev, and Jelični vrh. The slope is covered by forest with old, unstable trees that pose a threat to the road, while an even greater danger is represented by rock blocks and overhanging slopes.

In the past, protective measures had already been implemented along the roadside slopes in Zala, significantly reducing the frequency of falling rocks. However, rocks were still falling on three sections, which were protected this year with high-tensile mesh and flexible rockfall protection barriers.

Extensive logging, drilling works, and helicopter installation of flexible rockfall protection barriers

Over the past eight months, extensive logging and tree removal, drilling works, installation of flexible rockfall protection barriers, and covering of slopes and hazardous rock blocks with mesh have been carried out in Zala. Using a mountaineering drilling rig, we drilled approximately 5 km of boreholes.

Together with a team of trained rope access technicians and our subcontractor, we installed 28 flexible rockfall protection barriers with a total length of 2,253 m and more than 6,500 m² of high-tensile mesh. Where mobile cranes could not be used due to the steep terrain and difficult logistics, the installation of the systems was supported by the Austrian company Heli Austria and the Slovenian company Flycom Aviation, which provided helicopter assistance.
