The local road between Kneža in the Bača Valley and the village of Loje had long been heavily affected by poor geological conditions, which caused erosion and the collapse of larger rock masses. Since temporary solutions were no longer sufficient, we carried out a comprehensive rehabilitation of the cut slope above the public road after part of it had slid away.
Temporary measures were no longer sufficient
Due to falling rocks and severe erosion along the approximately 22-meter-long steep slope, safety measures had already been implemented in the past to protect the public road. The roadway surface was concreted to prevent vehicle vibrations from accelerating the loosening of the slope and to stop rainfall from soaking the ground, especially during winter when frost further intensifies erosion processes.
However, these measures proved insufficient. Because of the extremely poor geological composition of the terrain, erosion continued even beneath the reinforced concrete slab that had previously only provided temporary stabilization. As a result, cavities formed and the slope became increasingly unstable.
Comprehensive slope rehabilitation in multiple stages
Through a full rehabilitation and protection of the slope, we prevented further erosion and ensured both the stability of the area and the safe use of the road. The rehabilitation works included:
- removal of unstable slope material,
- slope protection using sprayed concrete (shotcrete),
- construction of reinforced concrete columns,
- installation of 12-meter geotechnical anchors for additional reinforcement of the concrete structures.
