Challenge

In Vurberk, we installed a specialised cable crane to enable the controlled transfer of a 250 kg aerial bomb to a protected disposal pit. Our key contribution was the design, installation and testing of the system, which enabled the safe transport of the bomb under extremely demanding and safety-critical conditions.

In 2017, we were involved in one of the most demanding unexploded ordnance disposal operations in Slovenia – the safe neutralisation of a 250 kg American aerial bomb from World War II, which was discovered by a local resident near Vurberk Castle and subsequently transported to the yard of his nearby house.

Installation of a cable crane for the safe transfer of the bomb

Due to the high safety requirements, our key task was to install a specialised cable crane for the safe transfer of the bomb from the location next to the residential house to a protected pit for controlled disposal. The system enabled the controlled transport of the explosive device without additional risk to people, infrastructure or the surrounding area. The cable crane was thoroughly tested beforehand, and the entire transfer scenario was simulated.

The project required careful planning, technical coordination and execution in cooperation with the National Unit for Unexploded Ordnance Disposal (UXO), civil protection, the police and other emergency response units. Due to the danger involved, a wider area within a one-kilometre radius was also evacuated.
