Challenge

The geotechnical rehabilitation of unstable slopes along the Mali Zvornik–Gračanica state road required a comprehensive approach to stabilising challenging terrain. The key challenge was the long-term reinforcement of exposed slopes using geotechnical anchors, anchored mesh and erosion-control measures.

In June 2016, we carried out the geotechnical rehabilitation of unstable slopes along Section 1B-28 of the Mali Zvornik–Gračanica state road in the Republic of Serbia. The project included protective and stabilisation measures as part of the rehabilitation of damaged national transport infrastructure.

Modern geotechnical solutions for slope stabilisation

The rehabilitation works included the implementation of a comprehensive slope stabilisation system using modern geotechnical solutions. A 3D geocomposite mesh was first installed on the slopes to protect the surface, improve ground stability and provide erosion control. A heavy-duty anchored mesh was then installed over it to ensure the long-term stabilisation of rock and soil masses.

Geotechnical anchoring was a key part of the project. The anchored meshes were secured to the underlying rock using GW and SIS (IBO) type geotechnical anchors, with a total installed anchor length of approximately 3,500 linear metres. This solution enabled effective slope reinforcement even in the most exposed and geologically challenging sections of the route.
